I'm Salima, the heart behind Azul Rugs. Our mission is simple yet profound: to bring the charm of handmade rugs to your home, making them accessible to anyone who yearns for a touch of uniqueness and sustainability. But our vision extends beyond commerce. We're here to ensure that the skilled artisans in Morocco, the creators of these woven wonders, are fairly compensated. By doing so, we're not just preserving a beautiful craft, but also inviting you to become a part of this preservation journey.
Endangered craftsmanship
My bond with Azul Rugs is deeply personal. Having spent my early years in Morocco, I've always felt a strong connection to my Amazigh roots. Over the years, my family and I have embarked on numerous trips back to Morocco, each visit deepening my bond with my heritage.
During these visits, I discovered the artisans who pour their hearts into creating these stunning rugs, a craft that is sadly fading away. The reason? Wholesalers buying these rugs at prices that barely cover the cost of materials, let alone the artisans' time and effort. Living in isolation with limited opportunities, these artisans often have no choice but to accept these unfair prices. The younger generation, seeing the struggle, is hesitant to carry forward this labor-intensive craft.
Azul: 'From the heart'
As a child, I dreamt of making a difference in my homeland. Azul Rugs is the realization of that dream. Azul, meaning 'from the heart', embodies the spirit of our venture. Every day, I have the privilege of working with these gifted artisans, actively contributing to the preservation of my Amazigh heritage. And you, by choosing Azul Rugs, become an integral part of this preservation journey, a thought that fills me with immense joy!
Unity in Creation
One of the most heartwarming aspects of this journey is witnessing the unity of families during the production process. From the sheepherders to the wool washers, from the men who gather plant-based raw materials to the wool dyers, from the women who hand-knot the rugs to the men who wash them - everyone works in harmony to create these sustainable, high-quality rugs.
This spirit of collaboration extends to the Netherlands, where we design our Minimal Art Collection and Fusion Art Collection. It's a delightful
challenge for our weavers to bring these Dutch designs to life. Our Traditional Art Collection, on the other hand, showcases the weavers' own designs, a testament to their creativity.
A future full of hope
At Azul Rugs, we believe in giving back. We invest 10% of each rug sold in welfare organizations in Morocco, improving the living conditions of our artisans. And for every rug sold, we plant a tree in Morocco, doing our part to reduce our ecological footprint.
